So while the Biden administration dragged its feet, DeSantis took decisive action, sending four planes to bring Americans home to safety.
The evacuees, mostly young adults participating in the Birthright program (a transformative initiative connecting Jews to their heritage) faced a perilous situation as Iran fired missiles into Israel, shutting down the country’s airspace. Stranded and vulnerable, they boarded the Mano Maritime cruise ship Crown Iris in Ashdod, Israel, for a tense 13-hour journey to Larnaca, Cyprus, under the protection of the Israeli navy. From there, DeSantis and the Florida Department of Emergency Management ensured four wide-body planes were ready to fly them to Florida.
Birthright CEO Gidi Mark called it a “complex and emotional operation, carried out under immense pressure,” praising the effort that safely brought 1,500 young adults to Cyprus. DeSantis didn’t stop there. He personally welcomed 300 of the evacuees at Tampa International Airport alongside his wife, Casey, proving Florida’s resolve to stand by its citizens and allies.
DeSantis didn’t mince words about the Biden administration’s failure, telling Fox News in 2023, “It was sad because the State Department and the embassy over in Israel were not helpful to these people. If you think about it, illegal aliens come across our southern border, and the federal government will fly them all over the country for free.”
Tampa Jewish Community Relations Council Chair Jonathan Ellis hailed DeSantis, telling conservative outlet The Hill, “Florida has the resources to make sure that American citizens can get back to the US that were stranded in Israel. You have to commend him for the actions he’s taking.” He added, “Look, Gov. DeSantis has been a tremendous friend to the state of Israel. He has a commitment to not only the state of Israel but to the citizens of the state of Florida and to the American citizens.”
