German Chancellor Olaf Scholz steps up to the plate on Russia's invasion of Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Democratic Socialist Party addressed an extraordinary session of Parliament on Sunday and made it very clear that Germany supports Ukraine in its fight against Russia after it invaded Ukraine's borders and has escalated a war against that nation.

First of all, he made it clear that he and Germany support Ukraine. He said that this war is "Putin's war," not the Russian people.

Next, he discussed sanctions and cutting the ability of some Russian banks to deal with SWIFT, as well as imposing sanctions directly on Russian President Putin and those close to him. It's all on the table, but one can imagine that it will not have much of a positive effect.

More importantly, Scholz is going to increase funding for the military by 100 billion Euros. "We must invest more to defend liberty," he said. This translates to more than a 2% increase in GDP for military spending regarding such things as "technical resilience in cyber security." He also calls for an increase in production of fighter jets and wants the EU, especially France, as a partner in this.

Also, he called for energy independence from Russia. He said that Germany will not refuse to speak with Russia, but they will not be naive and said Germany's greatest strength is their alliances.
