BREAKING/UPDATE: DHS Nielsen tenders her resignation

UPDATE: According to CBS News, Nielsen's resignation came abruptly as President Trump
"continues to fume over continued illegal border crossings. CBS News first reported Nielsen's impending departure, which Mr. Trump confirmed in a tweet after a 5 p.m. meeting with Nielsen at the White House."
Nielsen's departure is a part of an enormous DHS overhaul engineered and directed by top Trump adviser Stephen Miller, according to some anonymous [of course] senior U.S. official.

But Nielsen's tenure since she was confirmed in December 2017 hasn't always been great. President Trump had been taking some of his frustrations over illegal immigration out on her. and there were questions about whether she might leave for months.

"This afternoon I submitted my resignation to @POTUS and thanked him for the opportunity to serve in his administration. It's been an honor of a lifetime to serve with the brave men and women of @DHSgov," Nielsen wrote in her resignation letter, which she tweeted Sunday evening. "I could not be prouder of and more humbled by their service, dedication, and commitment to keep our country safe from all threats and hazards."

President Trump announced late Sunday afternoon that DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen "will be leaving her position" after having served 16 months in the position. It's understood that the President asked her to submit her resignation and he plans to announce that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan will be replacing her, at least on a temporary basis.

Trump tweeted:
"I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!"
Sunday's meeting took place amid an ongoing crap load of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border that has been putting major stress on our immigration system and sparking frustration within the White House.

On Friday, Trump confirmed he withdrew the nomination of acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Ron Vitiello to become the permanent head of the agency, telling reporters that "Ron’s a good man, but we’re going in a tougher direction, we want to go in a tougher direction."

Ron may have told President Trump that he didn't like his tie which prompted the tougher decision situation.

Nielsen skipped last week's meeting of interior ministers from the Group of Seven, in Paris, to deal with the migration crisis, which she has compared to the aftermath of a Category 5 hurricane.

She also has taken to social media in recent days, tweeting that Congress must give border and immigration officials the tools and resources needed to "fulfill our humanitarian and security mission." Of course, she totally correct and if you want to blame anyone for the crisis on the border, blame the Democrats who refuse to fund CBP.

Nielsen visited El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday, marking her first stop on a border tour aimed at assessing the surge of migrants and the department's response. "Our system and facilities were never structured to withstand the current influx of immigrants," she said.
