Airport baggage handler pleads guilty to stealing guns from passenger luggage

Portland, OR -- A former Portland International Airport (PDX) baggage handler hired through a third-party, has pleaded guilty to charges that he stole guns from passengers’ bags last year.

The thefts occurred from August 19, 2018 to September 17, 2018 and during the period Kelly has been accused of stealing six guns from checked-in luggage from PDX.

According to reports, the weapons included three 9mm pistols, two .40 caliber pistols and a .45 caliber pistol.

Police suspected Kelly of stealing the weapons and set up two pieces of luggage with replica guns inside as bait. Kelly was seen taking the second bag with the firearm and then returning it with the lock damaged.

Authorities searched Kelly’s home where he confessed to the thefts. He was arrested September 25, 2018.

Kelly is a convicted felon and thus, is not allowed to own firearms. He is facing maximum charges of 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine for possessing a stolen firearm, KATU reported.

Sentencing is set for July 29, 2019.
