Defense Secretary James Mattis will retire at the end of February, President Trump says Thursday evening.
Gen. Mattis will be retiring 'with distinction' Trump said, but it is likely that the Syrian pull-out may have been the last straw for the retired U.S. Marine Corps general.
President Trump ignored Mattis' suggestion as to who should be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and this may have also contributed to his shocking announcement.
"Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense, whose views are aligned with yours, I believe it's right for me to step down from my position . . . " his letter said in small part.
Mattis is a Democrat and a fierce warrior for the United States.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned.
