The alleged shooter was identified by the Albany Police Department as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32, and he is said to be armed and dangerous.
Americus Police Chief Mark Scott did not name the two officers involved but said "There are no words to express the pain and sorrow."
The dead officer was from the Americus Police Department and the other from Georgia Southwestern State University. That officer is now on a Life Flight to a Macon hospital about 75 miles from the scene. Both officers suffered head wounds.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the Country Club Estates apartments in the vicinity of Georgia Southwestern State College. The Americus cop went to the complex on a domestic disturbance call while the GSW officer arrived as backup, Scott told local news WGXA.
"A shooting has taken place off campus near the south side of the Griffin Bell Golf Course," a GSW statement said. "Students, faculty and staff should remain in their present location until further notice."
