BREAKING: At least 3 officers killed in Baton Rouge

Developing -- At least 3 police officers were killed and 3 others injured Sunday in the Baton Rouge area. One suspect was also killed in a shootout with police and two other suspects may be at large.

It has been just now reported that 2 people were taken into custody but their status is not clear as to whether they are also suspects.

The shooting occurred around 9:00 a.m. and was less than a mile from police headquarters. This, of course, comes at a time when anti-police violence has been advocated by the black community, particularly the New Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter. 

However, there is no evidence that either group was directly involved.

A robot was brought in by the police to examine the dead suspect for explosive devices.

One witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was clothed in black, his face covered and was shooting indiscriminately after he walked out from between a convenience store and car wash.

The officers were taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where police units are stationed to provide protection if needed. An officer with a rifle blocked the parking lot of the ER.

In all, five patients were received by the hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Ashley Mendoza. She stated that all five are "law enforcement professionals." One of the surviving officers is listed in critical condition and the other in fair condition.

Officers from the Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office were involved, according to Casey Hicks, a spokesman from the sheriff's office.

The officer is in "extremely critical condition" according to Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden.

There is at least one, possibly two shooters at large, said the mayor. He called the shooting an "ambush."
