Obama and the Wussification of Sports Team Names

We have become a nation of sensitive whiners and hyper-sensitive complainers. Now the president is getting involved with this nonsense. The Washington Redskins are being pressured to change their name. Redskin is apparently unacceptable to people of the Native American persuasion. In fact, we used to call this group of people "Indians," because Christopher Columbus got lost and thought he was in India. Believe me, I've been to India--there's no comparison. But now political correctness says that it is offensive to refer to a group of native Americans as redskins because, well, it's just offensive and that's that.

Negroes call themselves "blacks," and that's a reference to their skin color--and they see it as a prideful thing, but native Americans have a problem when a reference is made to their skin color. I don't see it as a disrespectful thing except, perhaps, in Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA," when he refers the "Yellow man."

In any case, I don't see why Obama has to get involved. It isn't like he hasn't got enough problems with those damned jihadist, suicide vest-wearing, hostage-holding, GOP terrorists of the tea party. And the debt ceiling is kind of important. And the closing of the war memorials, government open air monuments and the public roads that lead to them, are also pretty important to the American people. And the stock market is beginning to show signs of worry over Obama's paranoid schizophrenic handling of everything.

But I think that if we're going to change the name of the Washington Redskins, like Obama thinks should be done, then we must also change the names of other teams that might offend someone.

The Kansas City Chiefs is obviously a team that derives its name from native American culture just like the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Blackhawks. Hey, maybe we need to reconsider the name of that famous helicopter whose name is in the title of a movie.

Next, we should ditch the name of the Cleveland Indians for obvious reasons, along with the Spokane Indians, their farm team. But let's not forget the Cleveland Browns--that's insulting to people from India, like my wife. She wants their name changed, she said, after learning about Washington. Just kidding.

What about the Cincinnati Reds? Just because they don't have "skins" at the end of their name doesn't mean that it isn't named after native Americans, just like the Milwaukee Braves. Of course, the Cincinnati Reds were once called the Red Stockings, but you get the point.

Should the Los Angeles Angels and New Jersey Devils change their names so as not to offend atheists? The New York Giants might offend short people and the Dallas Cowboys sounds sexist to some idiots. Actually, now that I mentioned it, Los Angeles might think about changing their name too.

But my favorite name belongs to a minor league baseball team in the Midwest. They are the mighty Kane County Cougars. Just think about that, folks.

Should older women be upset?
