Former Dem congressional candidate pleads guilty to manslaughter

Kellie Lynn Collins, 31, may be the only Democrat who supports the ownership of firearms. Unfortunately, she used such a device to shoot and kill her husband, Curt Cain, 41, after just one week into their marriage.

The former Georgia Democratic congressional hopeful pleaded guilty on Thursday to voluntary manslaughter in the 2018 death of her husband, according to reports.

Collins was facing charges in the shooting death of her husband, whose body was found in his home in Aiken, S.C., last August. Investigators determined he’d been shot in the back and died from loss of blood.

Collins and Cain had only been married for one week before his death. The Augusta Chronicle reported that Collins had been made the beneficiary of Cain’s insurance less than a month before he was killed. This may have been the motive or the fact that he refused to give up the remote when "The View" was airing.

The McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia arrested Collins on Aug. 8, 2018, and extradited her to Aiken five days later, the Aiken Standard reported.

Collins had run as a Democrat to represent Georgia’s 10th Congressional District but dropped out before the 2018 election. Cain was serving as the treasurer of her campaign, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Collins initially rejected the plea deal but accepted after speaking with her lawyers, The Chronicle reported. A charge of grand larceny was dropped as part of the deal, the report said.

Too bad for Collins this didn't happen in California. She would be out of prison before the 2020 election, and if the Democrats could have their way, she'd be able to vote for them.

Roof won't call witnesses or give evidence to spare his life

The racist Dylann Roof, who shot and killed 9 people in a South Carolina church in 2015, told the judge Wednesday that he isn't planning to present evidence to ask a jury to spare his life.

Roof was also trying all he could to keep potentially embarrassing evidence about himself and his family out of court. Nobody knows what that evidence might be, but the judge and prosecutors carefully tiptoed around describing it during a hearing Wednesday. 

The judge said, however, that it may be allowed during the penalty phase of the trial, which begins next week.

Roof said that he would be acting as his own attorney in the penalty phase to keep his secret a secret. 

Judge Dick Gergel told Roof that being his own attorney was a bad idea.

"I'm not intending to offer any evidence or call any witnesses whatsoever," the racist Roof told Gergel.

"That's your decision," Gergel told Roof. "I think that highlights my advice to you that you aren't served by being your own counsel." He then told Roof to talk to his grandfather, who's a lawyer, and other family members one last time. He gave Roof until the start of the penalty phase Tuesday to change his mind and hire his publicly-funded, powerful defense team.

Roof will face the same jurors who convicted him on 33 counts including hate crimes and obstruction of religion. They will decide if he faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

The defendant spoke for a little over 9 minutes of the 35-minute hearing telling Gergel that he does plan an opening and closing statement. He told Gergel that he objects to prosecutors' plans to present a photo of evidence in the court's possession. 

Roof, Gergel and assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson were careful about not saying exactly what that evidence was.

The Tragic Death of Walter Scott

The death of Walter Scott was caught on video showing how he was running away from the cop who stopped him for a broken taillight. The cop assumed the shooting position and fired 8 rounds into Scott's fleeing back. 

Unless something falls from the sky in court, I cannot fathom how the cop, Michael Slager, will not be found guilty of murder.

The incident took place in Charleston, S.C. and was extremely disturbing. 

Here was a man, obviously scared, running from the police officer only to be gunned down and handcuffed as he lay on the ground, probably already dead. There's more to the story but that isn't what this post is addressing.

Rev. George Hamilton, the minister who presided over Walter Scott's funeral, told the hundreds gathered there that the shooting of a black man by a white man was the act of a racist cop. This has a high probability of being true, but it is not a fact, at least not yet.

"All of us have seen the video," Rev. Hamilton said. "There is no doubt in my mind and I feel that Walter's death was motivated by racial prejudice." He called Slager a disgrace to the North Charleston Police Department, and I don't disagree.

Apparently, Rev. Hamilton believes things based on "feelings" from personal beliefs that came from learning them; it is internal "evidence" that satisfies his belief system.

Perhaps religious people are better able to put more credence in their beliefs about something that lack external proof or evidence, than, say, a detective, scientist, or a defense attorney. 

I am not implying that religious people are wrong about the existence of God, for example, simply that it's easier for them to believe in something they feel strongly about without clear proof that their belief is justified. It's called "faith."

"This particular cop was a racist. You don't Tase a man and then shoot," Rev. Hamilton said, and thankfully added, "we will not indict the entire law enforcement community for the act of one racist."

Mr. Scott was described by the minister as a born-again Christian, "not perfect," but told the people gathered that nobody is perfect.

According to The New York Post, the Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to make his voice heard on Sunday at the vigil for Mr. Scott. That should be uplifting and a voice of reason and love. After all, Rev. Al is a man of God, right?
