Her "Tax the Rich" dress made headlines in 2019 when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Socialist-NY) wore it at the exclusive "Met Gala" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was her way of flipping off people with more money than she has made from the taxpayers. The tickets for the gala go for a mere $50,000 each.
Another New York City elected lawmaker also wore a glamorous gown and had a rather different message.
New York Republican City Council Member Inna Vernikov wore a beautiful blue and white evening gown emblazoned with the Star of David, the Israeli flag emblem, at the annual Manhattan Republican Club gala on Saturday night December 9. Ticket ranged from $475 to $10,000 each and the event was held at the New York Road Runners Club, at 320 West 57th Street, NYC.
"So many Jewish New Yorkers & Jewish college students all over the country are afraid to display their Jewish identity, war a Kipa, a Star of David, or express support for the great state of Israel," Vernikov posted on social media platform X.
"We cannot be afraid! We cannot remain silent! Be Jewish. Be Loud. Be Proud. This is where we live and we will not be intimidated!"
Ms. Vernikov, a Ukrainian-born Jew, has long advocated for human rights and democracy particularly against Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine and the continuing attacks, both verbal and physical, against American Jews.
Vernikov said that her dress was put together in just 24 hours by celebrity designer Irina Shabayeva.
Shabayeva thanked Vernikov for her "bravery and leadership" in wearing the dress as a statement supporting the Jewish state, who Vernikov calls Israel "our only true ally in the Middle East."

The operant word is "true."
