Gillibrand lies about guns, the NRA, and gets called out

People who a clueless are clueless of their cluelessness. Democratic presidential candidate who is currently polling in the high zeros is Sen. Kirsten "I'm Flexible" Gillibrand (D-NY). She has taken more positions than the Kama Sutra and is a lot less interesting.

Gillibrand told a string of lies about U.S. firearm laws and the National Rifle Association. Maybe she was just "shooting from the hip" but she doesn't seem to know what she was talking about in the Fox News town hall on Sunday hosted by Chris Wallace. And while Wallace is not a fierce conservative, he called her out on her statements.

Gillibrand has repeatedly lied about firearms and the NRA on the campaign trail, and she repeated many of her debunked lies on Sunday night because she, like most people in her party, believe all liberals are low-information voters.

"The NRA is the worst organization in this country," Gillibrand said. "They care more about their profits than the American people. They care more about selling guns to someone on the terror watch list or someone with grave mental illness or who has a violent criminal background."

The NRA is a non-profit organization and they do not sell firearms, so Gillibrand is either a liar or a moron--but of course, both things can be true at the same time.

Gillibrand's claim that NRA wants to sell guns to "someone on the terror watch list" is laughably false. FiveThirtyEight reports:
But civil liberties and gun rights groups are critical of the list. ... But the ACLU, citing secret documents released by the journalism site The Intercept, was critical in 2014 of the growing numbers of people on the watch list, saying there are no clear standards by which to determine who is placed in a database that can be used for religious and racial profiling. The rights of American citizens to contest their possible inclusion on the list is infringed because of the list’s secrecy, the ACLU said.
Gillibrand twisted what the NRA actually said. They don't want terrorists being allowed to buy guns, but they don't believe the terror watch list is the way to go to stop them because some names on that list are there by mistake. In a statement on Wednesday, the group said that “due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watch list to be removed.”

Also, the law is very clear. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, violent criminals are already prohibited from owning firearms, as are people who have "grave mental illness," assuming that they have been "adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution."

The problem is not legal firearms, it's the illegal ones that kill the innocent victims most of the time.

Later during the town hall, after Gillibrand made additional false claims, Gillibrand made false claims about the Trump administration.

"Remember, after the shooting in Las Vegas [Trump] said, ‘we’re going to ban the bump stocks.’ Did he ban the bump stocks? No! Because the NRA came crashing down."

She lied.

The Trump administration did ban bump stocks after the shooting and the ban just went into effect earlier this year. The NRA did nothing to intervene on the issue.

"The NRA is lying to the American people, it is not about the Second Amendment. … [The NRA] wants to make sure an abuser who has a restraining order against him can buy a weapon," Gillibrand, who was lying to the American people, falsely said.

As stated in its bylaws, the NRA exists to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, especially with reference to the inalienable right of the individual American citizen guaranteed by such Constitution to acquire, possess, collect, exhibit, transport, carry, transfer ownership of, and enjoy the right to use arms, in order that the people may always be in a position to exercise their legitimate individual rights of self-preservation and defense of family, person, and property, as well as to serve effectively in the appropriate militia for the common defense of the Republic and the individual liberty of its citizens."

Wallace called out Gillibrand for her total screwup on the issue of guns and said, “It sounds a lot more like it’s politics than principles… how do you explain the change?”

When she was a representative in a conservative district, Gillibrand loved the NRA and supported gun rights, which the NRA reminded her of on Monday.

Maybe we should call her "Pander Bear."
