Charlotte Man Charged with Killing Man Hours After Release on Bond

A convicted killer allegedly shot two men, killing one, less than two hours after he was released from a North Carolina jail on bond last week. 

This stunning timeline raises fresh questions about why the repeat violent offender was free in the first place. 

David Simpson, 29, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon in the July 29 shooting at an east Charlotte apartment complex. A Mecklenburg County judge on Friday ordered that he be held without bond . . . this time.

Court records obtained by WCNC (AM): A radio station on 1240 AM licensed to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, show Simpson was set free from the Mecklenburg County Jail at 12:20 a.m. after posting a $10,000 bond [probably at 10% cash] on an unrelated charge of possession of a weapon by a prisoner. Police said the shooting happened less than two hours later, around 1:45 a.m., leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded. 

Police said the shooting followed a long-running dispute over a parking space outside the apartment complex. Cops had already been called to the property twice that night after arguments broke out between the victims and residents over where they had parked. Surveillance video cited in the documents appears to show Simpson outside with his "shorty" when the victims' SUV drove past. Detectives said Simpson went inside, returned carrying what they described as a weighted black bag, and ran toward the victims. 

About 10 minutes later, problem solved, as two gunshots can be heard on the video. Roughly 30 seconds after that, Simpson is seen running back toward his apartment while handling the bag before driving away, investigators said. 

Officers recovered two spent 7.62-caliber rifle casings at the scene, where one victim had died. The second victim made it inside an apartment before collapsing and later underwent life saving surgery. 

Court records show Simpson was previously charged with first-degree murder in a 2013 fatal shooting but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2015, Queen City News reported. He served merely five years in prison before being released on parole in 2020. 

Since then, he has been arrested several more times, including on multiple charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, WBTV reported. He also had pending charges this year for possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting a public officer and misdemeanor larceny, WCNC reported, citing court records. 

Charlotte defense attorney Tim Cannady, who is not involved in the case, questioned why Simpson remained free despite his violent history. "If you look at his history, it seems like this gentleman has picked up just about every year up to this point some kind of a violent crime," Cannady told WCNC. "So you kind of have to ask the question: Why wasn't he already in jail?" 

Former Charlotte City Council member Tariq Bokhari offered a similar criticism. "We know what these top 1% of repeat offenders are going to do, and for some reason, we just don't have the appetite to take action," Bokhari told WBTV. "It feels like 'Groundhog Day,' to be quite honest." 

Simpson refused to leave his jail cell for his first scheduled court appearance Friday morning, delaying the hearing until a judge ordered him to appear later that afternoon. His girlfriend, Shakema Scott, has also been charged with accessory after the fact. Simpson is due back in court on Aug. 21.

This is what happens when the revolving door of soft justice keeps spinning. A man with a lengthy rap sheet of violence walks free on a modest bond, and within two hours another life is lost over a parking space. The pattern is familiar, the excuses predictable, and the body count keeps climbing while the system pretends surprise.

TV News chopper down, 2 dead in Charlotte

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD said a helicopter from WBTV has crashed and the two people aboard were killed. The crash occurred just after noon and authorities had to shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 77. 

Fortunately, no vehicles on the road were involved, police reported.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a Robinson R44 helicopter crashed near the freeway and Nations Ford Road and they, along with the National Transportation Safety Board are performing the investigation. 

The local WBTV news station said its Sky 3 helicopter crashed with pilot Chip Tayag and meteorologist Jason Myers aboard--both were killed. The station announced that "The WBTV family is grieving a terrible loss."

The CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said the deaths were a "devastating loss" and praised Tayag who avoided crashing into the freeway.

"The pilot is a hero in my eyes," he tweeted. "Witnesses indicated that the pilot made diversionary moves away from the highway to save lives. Because of his heroic acts, there were no further injuries or vehicles on the highway involved in the incident."

The investigation into the crash is underway.

Secret Service investigates teacher for alleged threat to our VP

The U.S. Secret Service is charged with the protection of the president and vice president and are now looking into an allegation that a North Carolina high school teacher told her classroom of impressionable students that Vice President Mike Pence "should be shot in the head," according to many reports.

"The woman allegedly told her class at Cuthbertson High School in Union County that Pence should be 'shot in the head,' WJZY reported over the weekend," The Charlotte Observer wrote.

The teacher, who has not been identified, made the statement the same week Mr. Pence stopped in Union County to campaign for the GOP congressional candidate Rep. Dan Bishop.

Officials of Union County Public Schools say they are taking the allegations "very seriously" and the teacher has been placed on administrative leave according to a statement provided to WBTV and other news outlets. The Observer said the Secret Service is investigating.

It seems as if our national politics has become our national religion. People who still cannot get over the 2016 presidential defeat of Hillary Clinton and exhibit Trump Derangement Syndrome, in many cases have become dangerous and are willing to get physically violent as evidenced with Antifa, for one example. But a school teacher making such a violent statement should be disciplined and investigated.

The school district said in a statement: 

"Union County Public Schools is aware of the allegation of inappropriate comments made by a Cuthbertson High School teacher. District administrators are taking this allegation seriously and an investigation is being conducted. This is a personnel matter and information related to this alleged incident is protected by state law."

NBC Charlotte spoke with former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker regarding what the investigation might entail. “I’m sure they will eventually get around to going out and interviewing the teacher,” Swecker told the station.

Swecker explained that federal authorities will probably be trying to answer several questions to determine whether criminal charges will be filed. Americans have a First Amendment right to say almost anything they wish to say, but that right does not extend to making threats of violence or inciting violence.

Swecker explained that it must be taken into consideration as to whether the statement was an imminent threat and whether she has the means [weapons, for example] to carry out her words. Officials will also look into whether she has made other threats and if she has a criminal record--if she does, then why is she working in a public school?

“Whether it was actually an imminent threat, does she have weapons?” Swecker said. “Have other threats been made? Does she have a criminal record?”

The teacher's comments prompted criticism in the community.

"You should not be bringing in those type of viewpoints to your job," Union County GOP Chair Allison Powers told WBTV.

Powers isn't calling for the teacher to be fired, but says the comment was inappropriate. "To just wish that kind of violence on anybody is just way out of bounds,” Powers said.

Firas Obeid [whose name also spells: "die for bias"], a parent to two students at the school, said he doesn't necessarily support the vice president, but also said the comment was wrong. "This is the vice president of the United States. He's an elected official,” Obeid told the station. "Affiliation to a specific party does not entitle us to make a statement like that to anyone.” He is correct.

Union County, along with neighboring Mecklenburg County, are in the state’s 9th Congressional District where Bishop narrowly won a special election against Democrat Dan McCready this month. Trump and Pence both visited the district, along with Donald Trump Jr. 

Their visits pushed Bishop over the top, political analysts said, and this may have caused the teacher to lose her rational mind.

Oops! Illegal alien in prison for murder released on 'clerical error'

Mecklenburg County, NC -- A 17-year-old illegal alien who was behind bars on a murder charge was sent on his merry way from a local North Carolina jail that had very recently pulled out of an immigration screening program with Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE).

Sergio Coello-Perez, a Mexican national, was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail Thursday after being in custody seven months. He signed a written promise to appear in court and to wear a 24-hour electronic monitoring bracelet, WBTV reported Friday.

On Friday, the alleged murderer was booked into the jail again after prosecutors obtained a court order for his arrest “to correct a clerical error” dealing with his bond status, according to the station.

Perhaps he was too stupid to know how to remove his electronic monitoring bracelet.

Coello-Perez was sprung for 31 hours, the station reported during which time he fortunately killed no one nor stole anyone's vehicle.

He was a lad of 16 this past May when prosecutors said he and a buddy tried to steal a car in Charlotte. They shot and killed the owner, Nicholas Boger, who tried to stop them. 

A judge jailed Coello-Perez without bail after his arrest.

WBTV reported that ICE had a hold on Coello-Perez at the jail.

The station quoted a spokesperson for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office as saying that the “ICE hold was lifted” but that was not why Coello-Perez was released.

Three weeks ago Garry McFadden was sworn in as Mecklenburg County sheriff and announced that he was ending the screening program that allowed deputies to perform immigration enforcement duties inside the jail with supervision from ICE. McFadden, it turns out, is not against illegal aliens who commit crimes from being allowed their privacy.

McFadden said ICE officials would need court-issued warrants or detainers to access the jail while he is sheriff adding that if he had a Mexican national son, "he would look like Serge."

The program had sent thousands of people into deportation proceedings since 2006. Ending it was a major part of McFadden's leftist election campaign. 

However, a recent report by wsoctv.com dated Nov. 2, 2018, states that McFadden "retires from CMPD amid concerns about previous homicide cases," indicating some questionable behavior on his part as a homicide detective that may effect the outcome of a previous murder case with which he was involved.
