Ilhan Omar demands her passport be released for some reason, as computers seized in home search by authorities

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) wants federal authorities to return the passport, computers, cellphone, and other personal belongings seized from her home during a criminal investigation. Her attorneys are also demanding recordings of the search, apparently hoping to establish that the government’s investigation is as improper as they insist it is.

On Monday, agents from the Department of Homeland Security searched Omar’s residence after obtaining a warrant approved by a federal judge. According to The Wall Street Journal, agents seized several items, including her cellphone, notebooks, personal computers, and passport.

Omar’s legal team responded Friday with a letter to the Justice Department demanding the immediate return of the property and declaring that the investigation has no legitimate foundation.

“There is no legitimate basis for any suggestion that she has violated any law concerning her citizenship status,” her attorneys wrote.

They then accused the administration of conducting a politically motivated campaign against one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent congressional critics.

“This vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated criminal investigation into one of the President’s chief congressional critics violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers,” they added.

Her lawyers also objected to the timing of the search, arguing that investigators deliberately acted during the final weeks before the midterm elections, when voters will decide whether Omar deserves another term in Congress. Justice Department practice has traditionally discouraged overt investigative steps involving political candidates during the roughly 60 days before an election, a guideline Omar’s attorneys contend the department violated.

In other words, Omar’s legal team would prefer that investigators exercise restraint during election season, particularly when their investigation happens to involve Omar.

The Justice Department, meanwhile, offered a less dramatic assessment of its conduct.

“Our attorneys and law enforcement partners complied with all court orders and legal obligations, as they always do,” department spokesperson Emily Covington told ABC News.

Omar’s attorneys also requested copies of any audio and video recordings made inside her home during the search. Whether those recordings will be released remains unclear.

The precise scope of the investigation has not been made public. However, The Daily Wire outlined five possible areas of criminal scrutiny on Wednesday, including questions involving immigration status, citizenship, financial disclosures, and potential conflicts of interest.

One possibility concerns whether Omar’s father committed immigration fraud while seeking refugee status, an allegation that could raise additional questions about her own citizenship, depending on the facts and applicable law. Another involves questions about when her father became a citizen and whether Omar was under 18 at the time.

Neither possibility has been established as a finding of wrongdoing, and the investigation’s actual focus remains unknown.

Other questions involve Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, and allegations that he used his wife’s congressional position to benefit his firm’s African clients through legislation. Questions have also been raised about the couple’s business interests and financial disclosures.

The couple’s reported finances have attracted attention in their own right. A 2025 filing valued their assets at as much as $30 million, largely attributable to Mynett’s business interests. An amended filing earlier this year, however, reported a net worth of approximately $18,000 to $95,000 and listed Mynett’s businesses as having no value after liabilities.

Those sharply different figures raise questions that may warrant explanation. They do not, by themselves, establish criminal conduct.

Omar, for her part, has framed the investigation as another chapter in her long-running battle with Trump and his administration.

On Thursday, she thanked supporters and constituents who have continued to stand by her.

“Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years,” she said. “It’s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress. I have always stood up to him and that will never change. The pedophile protector will never silence me.”

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.

For now, Omar wants her belongings back, her attorneys want the search recordings, and the congresswoman insists the investigation is politically motivated. Federal authorities, meanwhile, have yet to publicly explain what they are investigating or what evidence prompted the search.

That leaves a straightforward question hanging over the controversy: What, exactly, are investigators looking for, and what will the evidence ultimately show?
