Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, obviously a Republican, has apparently decided that Florida’s terrorist-designation process needed a little more honesty.
DeSantis officially designated the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Antifa as terror groups, based on their support and involvement with terrorists. This is creating the awkward possibility that some organizations long treated as perfectly respectable fixtures of American political life might suddenly have to explain why they are being treated like terrorist organizations.
This creates an interesting situation.
If these designations have any teeth, they will raise questions regarding how these organizations, particularly the Hamas-linked CAIR, are regarded nationwide. Will CAIR-Florida have to shut down? CAIR wields enormous influence among clueless and compromised politicians nationwide, as they court Muslim votes.
That could make the next fundraising dinner considerably more interesting.
Will politicians in other states think twice about appearing at Hamas-linked CAIR events since it is designated a terror organization in Florida? Or will they simply continue showing up, smiling for photographs and explaining that they are there to promote "dialogue" while pretending nobody noticed the giant terrorist-designation elephant sitting at the table?
The latter is much more likely.
After all, Washington and state capitals have spent years perfecting the art of discovering that an organization is deeply troubling only after it becomes politically inconvenient to pretend otherwise.
Of course, there is another possibility.
Once DeSantis is out of office and the Democrats are back in charge, watch for them to lift these designations and turn around and designate some patriotic groups as terror organizations.
At that point, Florida may discover that the state's definition of "terrorist" changes rather dramatically depending on which party occupies the governor's mansion.
The real question, however, is what practical difference these designations will make.
A terrorist designation that produces no meaningful consequences is ultimately little more than an official government document informing everyone that something is bad while everyone continues doing exactly what they were doing before.
Still, it is a start.
Florida has at least put the names on the board.
Now we get to see whether anyone is actually willing to enforce the rules.
