Kalamazoo suspect shoots 3 on bus, then shot, killed by police

Kalamazoo, MI -- A suspect identified as Anthony Oliver, 54, got on a Metro bus near the Kalamazoo Transit Center and shot three people. The incident happened around 9 a.m. ET, according to Fox 17.

The motive at this time is unknown and all of the victims are expected to survive.

“Mr. Oliver walked on the bus and began shooting,” Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley said..

“I heard boom, boom, boom,” said witness Mike Kirish, who was arriving at the station on a different bus at the time of the incident.

Kirish said the shooter then went inside the Kalamazoo Transportation Center.

“The shooter was standing five feet away from me with the gun and he looked at me and he waved the gun,” said Kirish. “My heart was pumping, I was scared for my life.” He said the shooter was walking back and forth.

Police said Oliver did not shoot inside the transportation center. Officers were called to the scene on a report of shots fired and found an active shooter situation. There was an exchange of gunfire by "several officers" and Oliver, who was shot and taken to the hospital where he later died.

“Unfortunately, around 9 a.m. this morning we had an active shooter at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center,” said Coakley.

No police officers were hurt.

Coakley who was on-scene all morning said his department is continuing to work with the community to end gun violence in the city along with violent knifes, baseball bats and other violent objects.

“It’s not one person’s job, it’s not one of our organizations job, it’s us and our community to work toward ending gun violence,” Coakley said. “It’s not when but where and we have to speak up, we have to talk about this situation in our homes, in our businesses, in our community.”

Travelers that arrived by train said they were rattled by this tragedy.

There are no future plans to defund the police.
