Jussie Smollett docs show prosecutors debated how to explain why they dropped charges

Jussie Smollett may get what he deserves now that documents released Friday show how prosecutors did mental gymnastics over how to paint a picture of their reasons for dropping the case.

In an email sent to prosecutors by Smollett’s attorney on March 26, the day before the charges were dropped, the lawyer, Patricia Holmes, suggested they claim that Smollett is a “dedicated citizen of Chicago who volunteers and contributes regularly in the Chicago area community," The New York Times reported.

Not that he does drugs and tried to get some from the two brothers who allegedly faked an attack on him.

On Friday, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx went public with over 2,000 pages of documents related to the case, in which the 36-year-old Smollet claimed to have been the victim of an assault in Chicago at 2 a.m. in a polar vortex by two white guys wearing "MAGA" hats.

Foxx had pretended to recuse herself from the case, citing false rumors that she was related to Smollett. Previous explanations suggested she sort of recused over contact she had with Smollett family members during the investigation.

The documents also show that Foxx’s team struggled over whether she should recuse herself at all. Texts with her chief of staff showed Foxx wasn’t happy about having to recuse, possibly due to her desire to exonerate the semi-talented actor. She also called the rumors of them being related as “racist" because everyone who says anything negative about people of color are racist on the intersectional scale of stupidity. But she also said that she was told by an ethics officer that she “had to do it.”

According to The Times story, the state's attorney's office and the defense lawyer traded a series of emails in which they tried to neutralize the language so Smollett would neither be depicted as innocent or guilty of staging the alleged attack, and also tried to scale back his depiction as a contributor to the community. [I believe that's spoiled blowfish I smell.]
The alleged "white" attackers
In March, Foxx's office said she hadn't "formally" recused herself and had used the term in a "colloquial" sense rather than a legal sense. So we can assume that she "colloquially" recused herself, as if that's a thing.

Smollett was charged on 16 felony counts that included making a false police report when he allegedly staged what was supposed to look like a hate crime against him.

I hope this case goes to trial and the truth comes out. I say that as an old, privileged white guy who is tired of racism even when it comes from those who believe they get a pass on it.
