Nancy Mace Moves to Boot Ilhan Omar from Committees Over "Disgraceful" Charlie Kirk Remarks

GOP Rep. Targets Omar's Education, Budget Posts After Assassination ControversyIn a fiery response to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s eyebrow-raising comments about the late Charlie Kirk, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is taking aim at the Minnesota Democrat's committee seats. Mace announced Monday on X that she's filing a resolution to strip Omar of her spots on the House Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on Budget, calling Omar’s remarks "disgraceful."

"BREAKING: We're filing a resolution to strip
@Ilhan of her committee assignments after her disgraceful remarks on Charlie Kirk’s assassination," Mace posted, sharing images of the resolution.

The resolution accuses Omar of smearing Kirk and implying he was to blame for his own murder during an interview with progressive outlet Zeteo. It also claims Omar reposted a video on X that "disparaged the character of Charlie Kirk and those mourning his death." This move is the latest salvo from Republicans who've had it with Democrats they see as downplaying Kirk's assassination or tying it to his conservative firebrand status.

The uproar kicked off after Omar's Zeteo interview, where she took shots at Charlie’s past rhetoric and the GOP's response to his death. "He was someone who was willing to debate and downplay the death of George Floyd," Omar said, also accusing Kirk of dismissing slavery’s impact and arguing "Juneteenth shouldn’t exist." When interviewer Mehdi Hasan called out those painting Kirk as just a guy seeking civil debate, Omar ineloquently doubled down: "There is nothing more effed up, you know, like, than to completely pretend that, you know, his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so."

Omar didn't stop there. She blasted Republicans for hypocrisy in criticizing Democratic rhetoric: "These people are full of s--t. And it's important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness, and have, you know, empathy, which Charlie said, 'No, it shouldn't exist,' because that's a newly created word or something." She added, "Like, I have empathy for his kids and his wife and what they’re going through."

Facing backlash, Omar took to X to defend herself, insisting she "disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric" but doesn't "wish violence on anyone." She accused "right-wing accounts" of spinning a "false story" to "villainize the left" and distract from "Donald Trump gins up hate on a daily basis." Still, she called Kirk's death "mortifying" and claimed she condemned the murder multiple times.

Mace's resolution is a classic GOP counterpunch, reflecting the party's growing frustration with Democrats they view as soft-pedaling Kirk's death. Whether it gains traction in the House remains to be seen, but it's clear the bad blood between Omar and her critics isn’t cooling anytime soon.
