American parents of a son born in Jerusalem wanted to have Israel listed as his country of birth on his passport but the Supreme Court ruled against the request.
This goes against the Foreign Relations Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2003 where it states that U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem can have Israel put on passports as place of birth if they request it.
The Obama administration and the Palestinian Authority has never followed that law because neither recognizes Israel's right to exist--at least in my opinion.
The Supreme's ruled 6-3 in favor of Obama. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Scalia and Alito dissented.
"The court takes the perilous step--for the first time in our history--of allowing the president to defy an act of Congress in the field of foreign affairs," Roberts wrote.
"The text and structure of the Constitution divide responsibility for foreign policy," Scalia argued.
"Like, what does 'dissented' mean?" asked Marie Harf.
