Murphy, 53, reportedly began experiencing numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while attending his son's hockey game. He was initially taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke, before being transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.
"He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment," Herwitt said in a statement.
"The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery."
Murphy was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and took office in January 2013. He has since emerged as one of the more prominent voices in the Democratic Party and has been mentioned as a possible contender for the party's 2028 presidential nomination.
Although Murphy is not seeking reelection this year, he has been actively campaigning for Democratic candidates, spending the past several weeks trying to help his party reclaim control of the Senate. He had been scheduled to campaign for Democrats in New Hampshire on Sunday.
The sudden medical emergency is an unwelcome interruption to those political ambitions, although the news from his doctors appears encouraging.
