A nuclear engineer in the US Navy has pleaded guilty Monday whereby he tried to pass information on American nuclear-powered submarines to an undercover FBI agent he thought was a representative of a foreign government. Oops.
Jonathan Toebbe, 43, appeared in federal court in Martinsburg, WV and pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to communicate restricted data. Rather than being shot by a firing squad, Toebbe will only be sentenced from 12 to 17 years in prison.
The scumbag and his lovely wife, Diana, were arrested last October after prosecutors said he abused his access to top secret government information which he sold details on repeated occasions regarding the design elements and performance characteristics of the stealth Virginia-class submarines, aka: SSN-774 class, or boomer.
This sub is nuclear powered cruise missile fast attack and the latest model not only uses stealth, but also incorporates intelligence gathering, and the latest in weapons systems technology. It is also designed to kick enemy submarines' asses.
“Yes, your honor,” Toebbe said when asked if he considered himself guilty.
According to the FBI, his scheme started in April 2020, when Toebbe sent a package of Navy documents to a foreign government writing that he was interested in selling the secret operations manuals, performance reports and other sensitive information to that country. The FBI got their hands on that package last December through its legal attaché office in the unnamed country.
A months-long undercover operation insued. An agent posing as a representative of the foreign country made contact with the Toebbe and agreed to pay thousands in cryptocurrency for the information Toebbe was selling.
His wife was accused as being a lookout at prearranged "dead-drop" locations where he deposited memory cards containing the top secret information that would clearly compromise our military ability that would cause Americans to die in war. Toebbe concealed the memory cards in objects like chewing gum wrappers and a peanut butter sandwich.
Diana Toebbe pleaded not guilty and her case is pending.
The country to which Jonathan Toebbe was looking to sell the information has not been identified in court documents and was not disclosed in court during the plea hearing Monday, but it probably wasn't Canada, eh.
Toebbe, who as part of his job had a top-secret security clearance, agreed as part of the plea deal to help federal officials with locating all classified information in his possession, as well as the roughly $100,000 in cryptocurrency that was paid to him by the FBI.
FBI agents who searched the couple’s Annapolis, Maryland, home found a trash bag of shredded documents, thousands of dollars in cash, valid children’s passports and a “go-bag” containing a USB flash drive and latex gloves.
