Developing -- A U.S. Navy ship was forced to fire warning shots at an Iranian ship in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday, according to U.S. defense officials.
The U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship, the USS Thunderbolt, was fast approached by an Iranian vessel. The Navy ship fired warning flares but the Iranian vessel ignored them and continued on course.
When the Iranian vessel came within 150 yards, the U.S. Navy ship fired its .50-caliber machine gun, which got their freaking attention.
The incident occurred Tuesday as a formation of U.S. Navy warships were involved in a military exercise in the Northern Persian Gulf.
The last time a U.S. Navy warship had to fire warning shots at an Iranian vessel was in January when it approached too close.
This is a developing story so please follow the updates.
