U.S. Embassy in Baghdad attacked as usual

The U.S. embassy in Baghdad has been attacked by mortar fire on Friday morning. Minor material damage resulted in the attack but there were no U.S. casualties.

There were explosions near the embassy at around 4:15 a.m. which were confirmed by an embassy spokesperson who said, "[A]ssessments are ongoing, but there are no reported casualties on the Embassy compound."

The attack was also confirmed by a U.S. military official who said the attack was launched at U.S. and Coalition forces in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which contains Iraqi government buildings and embassies.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed later that at least seven 60 mm mortar rounds landed in the U.S. Embassy compound while others fell into the river. U.S. and Iraqi officials mistakenly said at first that the projectiles were rockets.

The attack was believed to have been carried out by Iran-sponsored militias in Iraq, an embassy spokesperson said, but group immediately claimed responsibility but you can bet there were a bunch of "Allahu akbars" shouted as each mortar was fired.

"We again call on the Government of Iraq, as we have done on many occasions, to do all in its power to protect diplomatic and Coalition partner personnel and facilities," the official pleaded. "We reiterate that we reserve the right to self-defense and to protect our personnel anywhere in the world."

This was the first such attack on the U.S. Embassy since the Hamassholes started the war with Israel. Various terrorist groups have participated in the jihad since the war began.

The U.S. has about 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and approximately 900 others in eastern Syria, operating on various missions to thwart the Islamic State group.

According to the U.S. military, there have been 78 attacks against U.S. facilities, and of these, 37 were in Iraq, and 41 in Syria. This would not have happened under former President Trump's watch, I strongly believe.
