SUV slams into Texas crowd, killing 7 injuring 11

We don't yet know what caused a man to plow his SUV into a crowd of people standing at a bus stop in front of  migrant shelter Sunday in the border city of Brownsville, Texas.

The director of the shelter, Victor Maldonado of the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center went through the shelter's surveillance video after he was called about the incident.

“What we see in the video is that this SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the light that was about a 100 feet away and just went through the people who were sitting there in the bus stop,” Maldonado said.

The bus stop had no bench so people were standing on the sidewalk by the curb when the SUV struck them. Most of the victims were men who were illegal aliens from Venezuela.

The vehicle flipped after running up onto the curb and continued on for about 200 feet striking people at the bus stop and others who were simply walking along on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the main group who were struck, according to Maldonado.

The driver tried to flee but was stopped and held by pedestrians who held him until the police arrived.

Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval said the crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. and police did not know whether the driver intentionally hit people.

Eleven people remain hospitalized as well as the driver who is under 24-hour supervision. He is being tested for drugs and alcohol and is in a whole lot of trouble.

It is unclear whether the homeless shelter has anything to do with the incident.
