The suspect in the attack of New York gubernatorial hopeful Lee Zeldin (R) was stopped, disarmed of his "Kitty Cat Key Chain" weapon, arrested and set free all within hours. It happened in Perinton, NY located in the western part of the state.
Zeldin had predicted that under New York's bail reform, the attacker would be set free just as he had been. He said that cashless bail allows criminas to "instantly" reenter the community.
The suspect, David Jakubonis, 43, of Fairport, New York, was arrested Saturday on a federal assault charge, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of New York announced. Jakubonis is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Saturday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marion W. Payson.
He was arraigned in Perinton Town Court and released on his own recognizance after the attack. But prior to Jakubonis being allowed to hit the streets again, which Zeldin predicted, the Republican hopeful promised that he would fire the district attorneys who refuse to enforce the law.
What an incredible concept.

Ironically, Zeldin was giving a speech Thursday about bail reform at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post when the alleged assault happened. And also ironically, the suspect is also a veteran as is Lee Zeldin.
Jakubonis was holding a black hardened plastic keychain with two sharp points designed for self-defense, police said. It looked like it came off a Hello Kitty backpack, but the ears were dangerously sharp and could have caused serious cuts if Jakubonis know how to attack effectively, rather than someone who might be sporting a Hello Kitty backpack.
