Former French President convicted of corruption, sentenced to jail

Paris -- Former President of France Nicolas Sarkozy, 66, was found guilty Monday of corruption and influence peddling. He has been sentenced to a year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.

Sarkozy was president from 2007 to 2012. He was convicted for having attempting to illegally obtain information from a top magistrate in 2014 about a legal matter involving himself.

Due to the status of Sarkozy, he will be entitled to request home detainment, which much of the world is doing anyway, thanks to power-hungry politicians' reaction to the coronavirus. The only difference for Sarkozy is that he would have to wear an electronic bracelet.

The court said the facts were "particularly serious" given that they were committed by a former president who used his status to help a magistrate who had served his personal interest. And since Sarkozy is also a lawyer, he was "perfectly informed" about committing an illegal action. In other words, he knew that what he was doing was illegal.

Sarkozy's two co-defendants were also found guilty and given the same sentence as Sarkozy.

Sarkozy will face another trial later this month along with 13 other people on charges of illegal financing of his 2012 presidential campaign. If found guilty, he may be required to wear another electronic bracelet elsewhere.
