Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman thought something smelled fishy and he was right--others had their sights on a royal flushing of the Saudi royal family and tried to carry out a coup. At least four Saudi princes have gotten caught in a wave of detentions ordered by the Crown Prince on Saturday.
The full extent of those detained is not yet fully known, but Prince Nayef bin Ahmed, a high-ranking military official, was one of those caught along with three other senior members of the royal family.
Those boring people who follow the royal family said this latest wave of arrests raises the question as to whether Crown Prince Mohammed would soon step into the shoes of his old man, King Salman, who is 84 and looks it. [His full name is: Salman bin Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud. Seriously.]
Other analysts say that the crown prince was concerned about discontent within the royal family due to falling oil prices which have strained the Saudi budget and economy.
When Prince Nayef was detained, it appeared as if he no longer held any of his previous positions in the interior ministry, the military or as head of army intelligence. But for now, he still has his head and hopes to keep it.

Prince Nayef was detained together with his father, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, who is the last surviving full brother of the king. It looks like a case of "like father, like son" if indeed they are found guilty.
“It is surprising he would move on Prince Ahmed with the king’s authority still there,” said Kristin Smith Diwan, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
The recent wave of arrests has sent tingles and fear through the family and raised questions about the status of the king, according to several people close to the family.
Just wanted to throw this one in too |
If the detainees are found to be guilty of the charges for which they're being held, they can face up to a year in prison with no exercise yard time.
Just kidding--they'll probably be beheaded.
