BREAKING: Ukraine claims Russia fired on its ships in Black Sea

The Ukrainian navy said that two sailors have been wounded after two ships were hit in Russian air strikes in the Black Sea. In addition, three vessels have been captured by Russia.

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has called for an emergency session of his war cabinet in response to this incident.

"Today's dangerous events in the Azov Sea testify that a new front of [Russian] aggression is open," Ukrainian foreign ministry spokeswoman Mariana Betsa said.

"Ukraine is calling now for [an] emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council," she added.

The attack on the vessels comes after a day of rising tensions off the coast of Crimea.

Ukraine accused the Russian coast guard vessel, named the Don, of ramming one of its tugboats in "openly aggressive actions".

The incident allegedly took place as three Ukrainian navy vessels - including two small warships - headed for the port of Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, an area of heightened tensions between the countries.

This is a developing situation.
