Just before dawn on Tuesday, hundreds of Iranians gathered in Isfahan in the hope of preventing the hanging of two young men.
The security forces instead dispersed the crowd with violence and publicly executed 25-year-old Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and 28-year-old Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi. Both men had been convicted on charges arising from clashes which the Iranian authorities claim left four security officers dead.
Human rights groups state that the sentences followed proceedings marked by allegations of torture, forced confessions and closed-door trials. These executions form part of the regime’s response to the nationwide uprising that began in late December, after a currency collapse, soaring inflation and worsening living conditions sparked protests across Iran.
The forces of the Iranian regime answered with a sweeping crackdown that included internet shutdowns, mass arrests and the widespread use of lethal force.
The hangings, which reportedly took place at 3:40 a.m. local time and coincided with the morning call to prayer, proceeded despite last-minute appeals from United Nations experts, international human rights organizations and the State Department.
The Islamic regime are barbarians and need to be removed with prejudice.
