Lily Greenberg Call first told her parents what she planned to do, knowing the crap storm that would likely follow. Lily was the first Jewish staffer to resign from the anti-Israel, pro-Hamas, Biden administration. [H/T Jewish Telegraphic Agency.]
Speaking to the JTA after watching her story unfold and hit the proverbial fan, Greenberg Call apologized for the outside noises, audible from her side of the conversation.
“I’m just walking outside because I feel like I needed a break,” she said.
Although she looks 18, Ms. Call had served as a special assistant to the chief of staff in the Department of the Interior for a little more than a year. For months she tried unsuccessfully to call for change within the administration over their anti-Israel stance and one-sided demands Biden made on the Jewish State.
“There were internal meetings and listening sessions for appointees, and I was very vocal at all of them and I was vocal internally with colleagues about how I felt — and I think it’s been very clear because there are so many of us who feel this way,” she said. “But it’s really just a small group of people making the decisions.”
Imagine, the Department held separate listening sessions for Muslims and Jewish staffers, likely telling them what they wanted to hear, just the way Biden pretends to manage. “That was strange,” Call said.
For Greenberg Call, the separate meetings were especially dissonant and tense since she had been part of conversations that brought together Jews and Palestinians for a decade, starting in her high school days at San Diego Jewish Academy in California.
Greenberg Call's first reaction on Oct. 7 was to text loved ones in Israel to see if they were safe as Hamas terrorists massacred 1200 innocent people inside the country. Then she checked in with Palestinian friends to see how they were doing as Israel planned to not take the carnage without a fight.
She admitted that she suffered from PTSD when she was dashing to shelters at the age of 16 on a Young Judea trip to the Jewish State. Imagine how much dashing she would have done had she lived there.
Hopefully, Greenberg Call's resignation would be a wake-up call for Biden, but it's hard to awaken the dead.
Unfortunately, Call actually believes that there can be a peaceful co-existence between Palestinians and Israeli Jews. I wonder what she's been smoking.
