Chernobyl's encased reactor |
In 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant blew up and contaminated an entire area with dangerously high levels of radiation. On the first day Russia invaded Ukraine, it commandeered the power plant and now, as probability would deign, Russian troops have been arriving at medical facilities with radiation poisoning.
Chernobyl was targeted by the brilliant Russians and they likely planned to use it as a staging area for an attack on Kyiv, 58 miles to the south. Reports of intense combat and heavy traffic from bulky military vehicles alarmed the Ukrainian government, which was cut off from monitoring systems that ensure the site’s safety.
When the Russians captured Chernobyl, it was obvious and concerning that these troops were clueless to the dangers associated with the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in which many areas, even now, have radiation levels spiking a thousand times higher than normal.
Russian media avoids talking about Chernobyl as it is thought that the disaster was the event that led to the fall of the Soviet Union.
The facility has been completely scrubbed and encased in a large radiation-hardened sheath, but there are many areas surrounding the complex that are thick with radioactive dust, and these areas are where the Russian troops were ordered to literally dig defensive trenches.
While Russia has pulled out of Chernobyl with the Kremlin claiming it will scale back attacks on Kyiv during peace talks, some reports on the ground say it's due to the high radiation levels and its effects on the troops.
One of the areas Russia troops were stationed in trenches is known as the Red Forest. It gets its name from the stands of dead trees that were killed and dyed red by radioactive fallout in 1986. Even staff working in the Exclusion Zone are not permitted to enter the Red Forest, let alone to start digging holes there.

Russia allegedly shipped out seven busloads of troops from Chernobyl to facilities in Belarus, and there are also whispers that they sent several "ghost buses" of dead Russian soldiers back to the Mother Country under cover of darkness
With the Russian withdrawal, Ukraine has reasserted control over Chernobyl, but the scale of damage is still unclear. What we do know is that radiation poisoning ends in an excruciating death and Putin is a scumbag. This we know.
