Man stabbed on Manhattan train in likely hate crime

Police are calling it a possible hate crime, but when a guy yells homophobic  slurs and singles out a guy in the subway car sitting across from him and makes homophobic comments to him which elicits an altercation, can we really say it isn't a hate crime?

It began Monday on the northbound No. 2 train around 3:30 a.m., a time when you have to be either incredibly brave or incredibly clueless to be traveling the subway system at that time. The 29-year-old man was sitting across from a Black man who was shouting anti-gay statements at other passengers.

The dispute began around 3:30 a.m. Monday aboard a northbound 2 train. The victim, a 29-year-old man, was sitting across from an unidentified man who began shouting anti-gay statements at other passengers. The Black man then began directing his anti-gay rhetoric at the victim and they began arguing and soon it turned into a physical fight.

The train stopped at 34th Street--Penn Station and the fight spilled onto the platform where the Black suspect stabbed the victim with a sharp object, police said.

The victim didn't realize he'd been stabbed and got back on the No. 2 train when he discovered a stab wound in his chest and torso. He went to Mount Sinai West Hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled. Police describe him as a dark-skinned man approximately 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing about 185 pounds with a medium build and partial facial hair. He was last seen wearing a red Chicago Bulls hat, a gold chain around his neck, a black shirt, green cargo shorts and gay-looking multicolored sneakers.

Police released surveillance images of the suspect taken at the subway station. The stabbing is being investigated by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force as opposed to their Buddy Crimes Task Force.
