AOC uses Denmark to push her minimum wage--overlooks fact that Denmark doesn't have one

Rep. Alexandria Occasionally-Comatose (Socialist-NY) compared the U.S. federal minimum wage to the wage paid to McDonals's workers in Denmark. She forgot to actually do a deeper dive into what she was touting when she made the comparison.

"[McDonald’s] workers in Denmark are paid $22/hr [plus] 6 [weeks] paid vacation. $15/hr is a deep compromise - a big one, considering the phase in," the economics major with a degree from Boston University posted on Twitter to her ill-informed fans.

The Bronx-born, Parkchester-raised congresswoman called the discussion around raising the federal minimum wage "utterly embarrassing" in a tweet published Tuesday night and she called on the Senate, of which she is not a member to "o]verride the parliamentarian and raise the wage" to $15 an hour, pointing to the wage McDonald’s workers in Denmark are paid to back her demand which would likely put lower educated people out of work, making their minimum wage $0.

She also claimed in her annoyingly nasal tone, that the $15 minimum wage hike was "a deep compromise" and also demanded the Senate override the chamber’s parliamentarian — a nonpartisan officer who oversees rules and procedures in the legislative body, of which Ms. Comatose is not a member, and only runs Nancy Pelosi and the House because they are frightened of her and the squad she leads.

There is one thing Ocasio-Cortez’s argument left out, though: Denmark doesn’t have a nationally mandated minimum wage. Typically, trade unions work to keep wages above $20, but there is no federal wage, USA Today noted in a fact check [I ask the left to excuse my use of that dirty word] last month.

Others online pointed out AOC's imprecise Denmark example such as conservative journalist David Harsanyi, who explained to AOC that Denmark doesn't have a minimum wage.

Dinesh D'Sousa tweeted: "Denmark, like most Scandinavian countries, does not have a minimum wage," D'Souza wrote. "It is utterly embarrassing you don’t seem to know that."

The Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, ruled last week the wage hike should not be included in the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, as it goes against parliamentary procedure, thus throwing a wrench into the Democrats’ plans to pack the Covid relief bill with a pittance of relief and boatload of pork.
