Mission, Texas -- A Texas city commissioner was involved in a domestic dispute and was called to his home where social workers arrived to calm the situation with kind words and empathic understanding.
Not really--it was the police who arrived and were fired upon by Gabriel Salinas, 39, the city commissioner. who severely wounded his 39-year-old girlfriend with a machete and their 4-year-old son who suffered a head injury. In fact, there were no social workers on scene.
The police and a sheriff's deputy fired back when Salinas opened fire and barricaded himself inside the house. After a few hours in which law enforcement tried to contact him, they sent in a brave robot that found him dead in a bedroom.
“As far as I know right now, it was not a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I think that he died as a result of being hit in the transfer of fire,” [with the two Mission officers and a Hidalgo County sheriff's deputy] Robert Dominguez said.
Salinas' now ex-girlfriend was critically wounded but is expected to recover. Her son was treated and released, said Dominguez, adding that an autopsy will be done to determine whether Salinas was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Texas Rangers will complete an investigation of the shooting, said Sgt. Maria Montalvo of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Dominguez said Salinas was arrested in September on a misdemeanor assault charge involving the same now ex-girlfriend, but the charge was dismissed when the woman failed to pursue them. Clearly, she is a co-dependent person who never could see the signs of her now ex-boyfriend's crazy behavior.
