DOJ arrests hundreds in Mexican drug cartel

A major bust on a Mexican drug cartel operating in the United States has been performed by the Department of Justice in what is known as "Project Python,"
Thus far, there have been over 600 arrests and 350 indictments for serious crimes. The operations of Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) were at the center of the operation, which was led by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

“Project Python marks the most comprehensive action to date in the Department of Justice’s campaign to disrupt, dismantle, and ultimately destroy CJNG,” Criminal Division Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski announced.

He continued: “When President Trump signed an Executive Order prioritizing the dismantlement of transnational criminal organizations, the Department of Justice answered the call and took direct aim at CJNG. We deemed CJNG one of the highest-priority transnational organized crime threats we face. And with Project Python, we are delivering results in the face of that threat for the American people.”

Along with the arrests, the Treasury Department issued sanctions on businesses linked to the cartel this week.

"The United States is committed to preventing and combating narcotics trafficking globally. The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) yesterday designated four Mexican businesses pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act (Kingpin Act) due to their links to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) and the Los Cuinis Drug Trafficking Organization (Los Cuinis), two of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in Mexico," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released in a statement earlier this week.

"The Kingpin Act blocks all property and interests in property within the United States, or within the possession or control of any U.S. person, which are owned or controlled by designated individuals or entities. The Kingpin Act also generally prohibits transactions or dealings by U.S. persons, or persons within the United States, in property or interests in property of designated individuals or entities," he continued.

Hopefully, this will be the start of the eradication of the nation's drug problems that have caused the deaths of so many Americans.
