Don McLean of "American Pie" fame arrested

Don McLean, singer, songwriter and incredibly conceited performer was arrested in Camden, Maine early this morning for domestic violence assault--a misdemeanor here, a husband's religious duty elsewhere.

McLean, not quite fitting the definition of hero, was arrested (Monday at 2:00 A.M.) without putting up any resistance, according to Camden's Chief Randy Gagne. The singer was transported to Knox County Jail in Rockland, Maine.

He posted $10,000 bail and was released. His court date was set for February 22nd, George Washington's birthday.

McLean, who is 70, only performs occasionally, doing the Maine Lobster Festival gig over the summer and possibly a few burger joints along the coast. Nobody knows.

But the once famous singer sold his hand written lyrics to "American Pie" at Christie's auction house for $1.2 million, so it's hard feeling sorry for him and easier feeling sorry for Patrisha, his wife, possibly born to dyslexic parents.

The not-so loving couple have two children.

In 2013, McLean was stopped by police for speeding through a Maine school zone. His shyster lawyer, who was not at the scene, argued that the school zone warning lights requiring a 15 mph limit weren't flashing but police said they were.

The entertainer was fined $400 and was told to chill.

I once had the occasion to see Don McLean perform at some New York State fair (not the State Fair in Syracuse, but a smaller one). I was impressed over how condescending he was to the young people who simply wanted to get his autograph, or just to say hello. He reminded me of Jerry Lewis who once exhibited the same behavior at a local movie theater when I was a kid.

Maybe conceit is the price one pays for fame. I don't know, but I'd like to give it a try.
