At around 7:40 a.m. local time Thursday, reports of an active shooter at Perry High School in Iowa were responded to by police. The incident was confirmed by the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.
Heavily armed law enforcement of the Perry Police Department swarmed the school which is located about 40 miles from Des Moines. It is not yet clear if there were any casualties and no further information has been released.
To be safe, multiple ambulances had already entered and left the school grounds, WHO 13 reported, and the streets surrounding the school were blocked off as the investigation is ongoing.
Parents arrived upon hearing the news and frantically searched for their children. One mother, Erica Jolliff's ninth-grade daughter was rushed from the school around 7:45 a.m. and she said that she was still trying to locate her sixth-grade son an hour later.
“I just want to know that he’s safe and OK,” Jolliff said. “They won’t tell me nothing.”
The incident was reported on the first day back for students following the winter break.
Police are expected to provide an update later Thursday morning.
