Another Russian general bites the dust in Kherson, Ukraine

Yet another Russian general has been killed in Ukraine on Saturday, according to Ukraine's military. He is the fifth top leader to be killed since Russia invaded the country on February 24. It isn't typical for generals to be killed in combat as they tend to stay behind the fighting in relative safety, but generally speaking, this has not been the case in this war.

Lieutenant-General Andrey Mordvichev, commander of the 8th army of the southern military district, was killed when Ukrainian forces destroyed a command post at an airfield in Kherson, in southern Ukraine.

Kherson is a port city making it a strategically important area to control.

Mordvichev's death is a solid reminder to the invading Russians that Ukraine is not going to go down without a fight, if it goes down at all.

Meanwhile thousands of civilians are trying to flee Mariupol, which has been under horrific bombardment for weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video warning the Russians that the invasion would take a serious toll on Russia for "several generations."

The death of thousands of Russian soldiers along with some of their military leaders, is a harsh example of Zelenskyy's words, and come in response to a huge Putin rally held Friday in Moscow. The rally was purportedly held to support Russia's military, but reports claim many of the tens of thousands at Luzhini Stadium said they were “forced” to attend, which rings true based on the protests being held in Russia against the invasion.

In the video, Zelenskyy  accused Russia of deliberately creating "a humanitarian catastrophe" and once again appealed to Putin to meet with him to stop the bloodshed.

Currently, Russian forces are blockading Ukraine's largest cities, hoping to starve the Ukrainians and create miserable conditions that would get them to surrender, Zelenskyy said. He vowed Russia that they would pay the ultimate price (like the generals) and made it clear that Ukraine has no intentions of handing over their country to a scumcrumpet like Putin [my words, not Zelenskyy's].

“The time has come to restore territorial integrity and justice for Ukraine. Otherwise, Russia’s costs will be so high that you will not be able to rise again for several generations,” he said.

Zelenskyy made an analogy using the 200,000 people who were said to be at the rally in Moscow as roughly the same number of Russian troops taking part in the invasion.

“Picture for yourself that in that stadium in Moscow there are 14,000 dead bodies and tens of thousands more injured and maimed,” Zelenskyy said.  “Those are the Russian costs throughout the invasion.”

That seems like a fair analogy but it would have been even more powerful had he spoken about the Ukrainian babies and mothers who had been killed, hospitals and schools that had been bombed, and perhaps shown photos of the destruction. People who have never been to war have no idea of its horrors.

Ukrainian and Russian officials agreed to establish 10 humanitarian corridors for bringing aid in and residents out — one from Mariupol, and several around Kyiv and in the eastern Luhansk region, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Saturday.

She also announced plans to deliver humanitarian aid to Kherson, which was seized by Russian forces.

Vladimir Medinsky, a top Russian negotiator who has led in several rounds of talks with Ukraine, said the two sides are closer to agreement on the issue of Ukraine dropping its bid to join NATO and adopting a neutral status. But the NATO controversy seems to be a smokescreen because while Russia has borders with 14 countries, five border Russia and Putin has shown no concern over their presence. Let's not forget, NATO is a defensive alliance, not an offensive one.

Fighting continued on multiple fronts across the country over the weekend.
