Truck flees Border Patrol, crashes, 3 dead

Three people were killed on Thursday after their pickup truck went out of control and crashed after the Border Patrol laid down a spike-strip to blow the tires and bring the vehicle to a stop.

Agents spotted a truck and it showed all the usual signs of being involved in smuggling. They attempted a stop using lights and sirens, but the driver of the vehicle fled down Interstate 8, and the agents tried to force a stop used the spike-strip.

The vehicle continued traveling for about a minute afterwards, then the driver lost control and ran up the embankment on the side of the highway, rolling over and ejecting some of the eleven passengers.

Three  people in the pickup were dead at the scene. Three others suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup is a U.S. citizen and is in the custody of the California Highway Patrol. No names were released by the Border Patrol.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that nine of the people were in the truck's flatbed at the time the driver lost control.

In another incident the previous day in Texas, another apparent smuggling attempt went awry which led to another crash.

A Victoria County sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a Chevy Cruz but the driver fled away, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour before eventually careening out of control and rolling over multiple times.

Immigration authorities found four illegal immigrants had been in the car, including a 33-year-old Honduran man whose injuries were so bad his leg had to be amputated at the knee.

High-speed flights to escape capture by immigration authorities are common.

Attempting to deflate tires is a standard tactic, though not always successful, with some drivers managing to avoid the deflation devices. The Border Patrol is testing different methods of trying to bring fleeing vehicles to a stop.

The really disturbing thing about the story of the three who died isn't merely that they perished running from the law, but that some of the people were glad it happened as the original story appeared in The Washington Times.

I am totally against illegally migrants coming here, but their dying to get here isn't a good thing if you realize their crimes are not punishable by death. It's just terribly wrong, in my opinion, to be happy to see that happen to anyone.
