As you read this the orbit of China's Tiangong-1 space station is decaying and is completely out of control for the past several months. Space agencies from all over the globe are expecting it will come plummeting down to Earth in early 2018 and nobody knows where it will land.
Tiangong-1 ("Heavenly Palace") had a brief lifespan and hosted many "We're just browsing" Chinese astronauts, but once it ended its mission in 2016, the Chinese space agency admitted they lost contact with the spacecraft and that its decaying orbit would eventually result in its crashing violently back to Earth, killing anything in the crash zone with an immediacy that would make one's head spin.ss
Scientists who have been keeping a learned eye on the space station's troubled existence have tried to calculate where it might hit on the planet and have only been able to narrow it down to an area between 43 degrees north and 43 degrees south, which is an area mostly covered by ocean.
However, many non-scientific people, such as Al Gore and his global warming mavens, believe the scientists are just making up the numbers and are sheltering as you read this.
There is a 1-in-10,000 chance the space station will hit a populated area, potentially pulverizing people and/or destroying structures, but the chance that those people or structures will be Chinese is only 1-in-100,000 so China is unperturbed.
The debris upon impact may not be the worst of it as potentially hazardous materials such as hydrazine, a highly toxic chemical used in rocket fuel and California bongs might survive re-entry. Too much of the substance will kill you. Just the right amount, might make you high.
So keep looking up as the month of March approaches--that's an estimate of when it all comes tumbling down. But there's a two-week window so don't let your guard down.
When it falls, scientists will know as much about where it will strike as a liberal knows about guns and ammo.
If you see a bright orange object falling from the sky heading your way, duck.
