The San Antonio Observer, a Texas newspaper, plans to publish the names and addresses of every San Antonio cop in the Saturday edition. This comes on the heels of an officer-involved shooting last week of Antronie Scott.
Stephanie Zarriello, the paper's publisher, has ruled that Scott had been "unjustly murdered," as she described the situation whereby he was in "a position of surrender" when Officer John Lee shot and killed him on February 4th. Officer Lee is a 10-year veteran of the San Antonio police force.
"Like Ku Klux Klansman with hoods, [officers] do everything they can in order to protect their identities for fear of being brought to justice," Zarriello said at a press conference, held by the paper on behalf of the Scott family.
So apparently, now it's time to bring the entire San Antonio police department to street justice. This assumes that all San Antonio cops are guilty--at least that's what Zarriello has judged.
"Just as the names and addresses of sex offenders are publicized in order to protect the public from their wicked behavior, we feel that our community has the right to the exact same level of protection," said Zarriello, who is now judge and jury of the entire police force.
If it's fair to compare all cops to the KKK and sex offenders, how should we compare Zarriello and the San Antonio Observer?
The details of the Scott shooting is not the issue. A trial will determine the guilt or innocence of Officer Lee and the rule of law will prevail. If you have faith in the judicial system, you will believe that.
But Zarriello isn't putting the names and addresses of cops in the paper to protect anyone--their names and addresses are irrelevant to that end--she is doing it for two reasons: to sell more papers and to put the lives of the cops at risk.
Zarriello is as immoral as the claims she is implying about the San Antonio police force.
