According to Semafor, Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez (NJ) is the subject of a new federal investigation, they reported Wednesday. Prosecutors contacted those connected with Menendez and at least one subpoena has been issued.
This isn't the senator's first rodeo. In 2015, he and Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen were indicted whereby Melgen allegedly provided flights on a private jet and expensive vacations in exchange for Menendez's helping him out with government contracts, among other scummy things.
Sadly, the case ended in a mistrial in 2017 as the jury failed to reach a verdict. According to the senator's lawyers, he and Melgen were merely good friends without benefits.
Now it appears that the new probe is similar to the 2017 case, according to sources who wish to remain anonymous to avoid future mishaps. But these sources say that in this case, other people are involved, not the same original alleged miscreants as before.
Spokesman for Menendez, Francisco Pelayo, would not comment on the report, nor would a spokesman for the Southern District of New York.
But Menendez isn't worried. Corruption cases have historically been hard to prove, even when it involves a former President and the late, not so great, Jeffrey Epstein.
