The United Kingdom may have a history of a stiff upper lip, but when the Natural Environment Research Council had the public vote on the Internet, on its $300 million Antarctic survey vessel, that lip got a wiggle and a giggle.
NERC wanted "an inspirational name that exemplifies the work" the vessel will do, and the range of replies sounded like a Trump twitter war.
One reply was "It's bloody cold out here." That didn't seem to impress the judges.
Another snarky reply was: "Notthetitanic." That had a hopeful ring to it--had it been "TheTitanic" it wouldn't have stood a chance.
Right at this time, the current front-runner is "Boaty McBoatface." It has an Irish lilt to it and the public seems to love it, and was chosen by the communications manager. He has since apologized but it now has its own Twitter hashtag.
The deadline is set for April 16th and NERC will choose the name.
I'm going for "The UK Ark."
I would really enjoy hearing your idea for a name. Feel free to submit one in the comments.
