Team USA's women's hockey team is scheduled to play at the Olympic games in just a few weeks. Their goalie, Jessie Vetter, had to remove the words of the US Constitution, "We the People," from her custom-made helmet, which also bore her name. That too had to come off. The decision to remove these objectionable words from her helmet came from the International Olympic Committee.
Ron Slater, the artist who designed this mask (and many others for the NHL), worked with Vesser on its creation. He told FoxNews.com that he believes the IOC views our Constitution as "propaganda" that promotes the USA over other countries. That's ridiculous--we don't need to advertise to other countries to get them to leave theirs and come to ours--they do it in droves.
The mask will still retain the Statue of Liberty, a "USA" shield, and a screaming eagle.
Team USA's communication director, Rob Koch, believes this situation is more about technical specifications than anything else, and he says the team is okay with the required changes.
At the last O games, US goalies Jonathan Quick (is that not a great name for a hockey goalie?) and Ryan Miller also had to change their goalie masks. Ryan's had to remove "Miller Time," and Quick had to remove "Support Our Troops." How offensive that must have been to the other teams.
Rumor has it that Team Saudi Arabia has helpfully suggested the helmet depict two very large, boxy buildings burning with the inscription: "Allahu Akbar" written below.
I have come to hate the Olympics over the years. It has become political and dangerous. In the days of yore, players actually were amateurs, not pros making millions, and there was a different spirit. But, in spite of my animosity, I am rooting for the USA to kick butt.
